Retreat Hut

Our first Retreat Huts were created for the Magical Bridge Playgrounds, but they are an inclusive addition to any play area.

Retreat Huts are specially designed as an add-on for any playground structure for schools, parks, housing developments, or commercial outdoor playground spaces. These unique creations cater to children and adults with autism and sensory challenges by creating contemplative and quiet spaces for anyone who is overwhelmed by the sensory whirlwind of the playground. The cozy and calm space allows individuals to recenter themselves while remaining near the rest of the of play area. Rather than excluding anyone from play, Retreat Huts actually empower each person to re-emerge and participate in the wider playground experience at their own pace and within their own comfort level, leading to a greater chance of having a positive, social, and joyful day at the playground.

Because they are part of an inclusive playground design, Retreat Huts are fully wheelchair accessible, and thoughtfully colored in relaxing shades of blue. As part of our commitment to sustainable playgrounds, each hue is imparted with our all natural tung oil stain and the lumber used is sustainable redwood.

A sensory friendly playground needs to accommodate a variety of challenges. Retreat Huts are perfect for those who would like to dampen the noise from the play area, want less visual stimulus, or want a break from the social chaos to be more solitary.  

At our core, we believe that every child deserves an opportunity to engage in healthy play, develop motor skills, build social connections, and make friends. By offering Retreat Huts as a stand-alone or add-on feature to our wide range of custom creative play structures, we strive to create inclusive and welcoming environments where all children can thrive, regardless of their abilities or sensory challenges.

This structure meets ASTM F1487 Standards for Public Use Playground Equipment and the 2010 Americans with Disabilities Act.
